Photographic Form and Language.

Today a photography lecturer named Allan McDonald shared his knowledge on photographic form and language but I was unable to make it. I watched the Echo360 video to see that he began the lesson with an introduction to John Hilliard’s four different compositions of a body under a sheet. He explained how the varying framing allows for four different interpretations of the image (how the person may have died) due to what is shown within each frame.

This photo is in fact one single image, but it has been split into four different outcomes to demonstrate that framing/positioning plays an important role in getting the message or meaning across.

I wanted to take part in the exercise from class, so below are my two diptych pictures found via Google images.

The first diptych is of a young girl reading by bright blinds, then a close up of her face. This image is slightly confusing to me in its meaning. What I gather is that from the first image she is a dark figure in the mid ground, contrasted against a bright back and foreground. So she is stuck in between the light so to speak. The close up of her face shows she is not happy. Instead I’d say she looks as though she is staring out into the bright world before her, used to being trapped inside which is suggested by the calamity of her expression. Maybe this image is about being stuck but used to the situation one is in? I’m not sure.

The second diptych is of raindrops in a puddle and a young persons finger wiping at the condensation on glass. I think that the colours are meant to symbolise winter and cold weather, while the two images represent the comfort of being inside during rainfall, perhaps even alluding listening to the sounds of rain falling as well (raindrops hitting ground making the puddles).
